Everything shifts smoothly as of now but the other day started making an interesting whining noise. Live in Sacramento but anywhere in the Bay would work as well. I'm probably going to pull it out myself if it will save some $$.

On a scale from 1-10, with 10 being an engine rebuild, this is at least a 10.2 (I have built 2x M20’s).There are no rebuild kits for the getrag trans it is non-serviceable tranny unfortunately. 07-03-2008, 08:41 AM. 260's are stout, remember that 3.5L M30's used these gearboxes. The dogleg 265 (M3/M535) gearbox is stout, but the small dogleg 245 (323i) is not going to handle a lot of power. Most importantly, it's going to depend completely on how you drive the car--people kill drivelines, not horsepower. The Getrag 280 can best be described as a hybrid of a Getrag 260 and 265 transmission. The front and back transmission case sections come from a later 260. Like the 260, the shift forks are aluminum and wear out prematurely. Also, like the late 260, the teeth on the operating sleeve and gear engagement teeth on 2nd and 3rd gear are asymmetrical.

There's the intermediate 4- speed that has '240' cast into its case. There's the later 5- speed that's redesigned to be more compact. That said, there's no kit for any of it. The synchros were available a while. back and the bearings are pretty common, so it might still be reparable.
