NBME Self-Assessments for USMLEs have ~200 questions each. The Shelf-specific assessments have only 50 questions. Even the Shelf exams themselves are shorter than the USMLEs. Each Shelf exam is 110 questions, whereas Step 1, which has the fewest questions, has 280 items. TBH, after buying those practice exams, I don't find the NBME explanation super helpful. Most of the time, they give you a 1-liner reason for why the answer is right and then repeat that 1-liner in the "concept to learn" portion at the end of the explanations.
