When a dwarf is in the army they have a backpack full of rations. When they stop training they take the backpack off and dump the food out to get the pack ready for next use... leaving the food on the ground. I usually have a refuse room with doors behind a hallway, also separated from the fortress with doors, to create an air chamber. Then I go in and make sure the stockpile only demands things that can generate miasma. I also make sure there are a few dwarfs who only haul. They don’t have any other labors selected. They just haul.

Dec 16, 2022 · The cause is military dwarves carrying backpacks. They load up some food when they go on duty, then when they get off duty they throw it in their room and it's counted as owned by them. I am a 100% underground fortress designer. Miasma is a possibility, but if you manage your hauling well you can avoid it almost entirely. If you put your refuse pile one level underground, remove the roof, then roof over with something, you've created a place that has all the attributes of outside (no miasma, for example), that is secure.

Mitigations to avoid miasma spreading include: 1) enclose butcher/kitchen/still completely and use a door for access. (Not perfect since the door gets opened and things can block it. 2) put them in the top soil layer or topside in a building with a roof (for protection) so they don't generate ANY miasma since this counts as outside.

Even though this may not solve your miasma problem from rotting things other than dwarf bodies, this may solve your dwarf body problem, since miasma doesn't occur once the bodies are in a coffin.
