But despite the erratic ignition and velocity, it is a great powder for barrel break in, if you believe in barrel break in. Myself I use Tac for 55 and 62 gr FMJBT's and CFE 223 for precision loads. You won't find any advantage using Tac over CFE 223 with plinking loads other than gaining experience with Tac. But trying new things is part of the fun in reloading. I bought a pound for resting and finally got around to testing it at the range yesterday with the Hornady 160 FTX bullet. The best group 3 shot group at 100 yards yielded 1.120 inches.I would use Hornady's date. In my rifle I found 47 gr of CFE 223 and a 168 gr bullet to be too stout. Even popped a primer. I was using Hodgden's data and figured it would be good considering it was only .4 gr off their starting load. Same here, Hodgden data was/is hot for me in 308 & 223 for a lot of loads.

My go to load for my .223's is a 75gr Hornady match bullet and 25.5grs of CFE 223. I see CFE223 mentioned here frequently but have never used it. The biggest advantage to using CFE in 223/5.56 loads is essentially it's made to fill the case entirely leaving just enough room to set the bullet without going over pressure. I used once-fired Winchester brass, CCI small rifle primers, 26.5 grains of Hodgdon CFE 223 and the new 62 grain Berry’s bullet —a pretty standard combination except for the new bullet. H335 isn’t working out too well and as I understand can be temperature sensitive. I use the rifle in Montana where we have significant temperature extremes.
