I usually stay along in Torremolinos but have visited Fuengirola many times and have never been the victim of crime. Mijas is typically Spanish and probably what you are looking for, but is in the hills, and may not be suitable for a poor walker. Fuengirola / Los Boliches is flat but a vast area.
